Coordination Meeting at ORNL

CFCC coordination meeting between DOD, NASA, and DOE was held May 25 at ORNL to review the performance of CFCC materials for industrial applications and to provide an opportunity for interaction and guidance for future activities. The meeting included presentations on heat exchangers, steam reformers, and hot-gas filters and an overview on environmental degradation of ceramics and ceramic composites. A summary was presented on ASTM test methods and status of the ISO work on CFCCs. Discussion was also held on fibers with the Fiber Consortium. Scott Richlen, DOE-HQ, and Jerome Persh, DOD, are encouraging this type of interaction.

Papers Invited for ASTM Symposium

Papers are invited for the ASTM Symposium on Thermal and Mechanical Test Methods and Behavior of CFCCs January 8-9, 1996, in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Papers are invited on all areas of thermal and mechanical test methods and behavior of CFCCs. Submit title, 300-word abstract, and ASTM paper submittal form by February 6, 1995 to Dorothy Savini, Symposia Operations, ASTM, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19103-1187 (215/299-2617).

3M, Martin Marietta Announce Agreement

3M and Martin Marietta announced an exclusive license agreement for 3M to manufacture and market high-temperature ceramic composite filters for direct hot-gas filtration invented by the Metals and Ceramics Divsion at ORNL and funded by the DOE Fossil Energy Division through the Advanced Research and Technology Development (AR&TD) materials program and through the Morgantown Energy Technology Center. Additional development by 3M was funded through a cost-shared arrangement between 3M and AR&TD. Filters made with this new technology will allow the hot flue gases in advanced coal-fired power plants, incinerators, and similar industrial processes to be directly filtered without cooling of the gas stream, said 3M Ceramic Fiber Products program manager Michael Lynn.
