Configuring Netscape Navigator(TM) for Windows for Accessing PDF Files with Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat Readers are available for different platforms, e.g., PCs, MACs, UNIX, etc, and PDF files can be viewed with different browsers. Directions are given below for configuring Netscape Navigator on a PC system with Windows. For directions for configuring other browsers and platforms, see the Adobe Acrobat web site.

After Acrobat Reader software is installed, you will need to modify your set of Helper applications in Netscape Navigator. These instructions apply to Netscape Navigator version 3.0.

  1. In the Netscape main menu, under the Options menu, select General Preferences

  2. Choose Helpers from the tabs at the top.

  3. Click on the Create New Type... button.

  4. In the Mime type field, type application & enter pdf into the Mime subtype field. Click on the OK button.

  5. Type pdf in the File Extensions: field.

  6. Click on the Browse... button, and use the file browser to navigate until you find and select your copy of the Acrobat Reader application (it might be C:\acroread\acroread.exe or C:\acrobat3\Reader\AcroRd32.exe) and click on the Open button.

  7. Under the Action choices, select the Launch the Application radio button

  8. Click on the OK button at the bottom of the Preferences dialog.

The next time you select a PDF file, Netscape Navigator will download that file to your default temp folder and automatically launch your Acrobat Reader software to open and display the file.
